Genentech
Data Report Design System

Being one of the largest life-sciences companies in the world, Genentech promotes an internal process of acquiring and measuring performance information on their different products. Critical to the improvement of their products, information being gathered was so complicated to review - the information was going unknown and unused. We were responsible for developing a new set of design guidelines that greatly enhanced the effectiveness of the design.

CHALLENGE + SOLUTION
The Challenge: The information that Genentech provided us with - their reports were quite overwhelming. We knew our challenge would be to first, truly understand the essence of what was being reported - become experts in understanding the benefits and inflection points to their products; and of course understand how doctors judge the results to make decisions. We also knew that we were working with information that affected people's lives. We knew we needed to recognize the importance of the work being done.

We segmented our work into two key areas. First, understanding the reasoning and the decision points; and second, looking at the visual language and environment in which these reports were being read and studied. Each step of the way we analyzed information and established core statements and discoveries that we checked with the client on - to ensure we were drawing the types of conclusions that would be useful to doctors. We were also taking direction from Genentech staff - with specific information to call out and highlight. Again, each step of the way we were checking our work and clarifying the results.
